Gloria Ohuonu, 68, of Amarillo died Friday, March 24, 2017, in Houston.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Greater Love Temple Church. Arrangements are by Golden Gate Mortuary, 1416 N. Hughes St.

Gloria was born Jan. 13, 1949, in Wharton to Jodie Simmons Sr. and Esther Simmons. In 1978, she married Lee Ohuonu in New York City. She was a registered nurse for 45 years and touched the lives of many people.

She was preceded in life by her parents, Jodie and Esther Simmons; her husband, Lekuwa Ohuonu; and a sister, Josephine Collins.

Survivors include to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy, two daughters, Ugo Akinboye and husband Michael of Houston and Ihudiya Ohuonu of Amarillo; a son, Lee Ohuonu of Amarillo; her brothers, Jodie Simmons and wife Dora and Jimmie Simmons and wife Michelle, all of Amarillo; a granddaughter, Abigail Akinboye of Houston; and a grandson, Alexander Akinboye of Houston.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at  New Covenant Baptist Church, 3100 Angelus Drive.

Kenneth R. Burks, 62, of Amarillo died Tuesday, March 14, 2017, in Dallas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Maurice Burks as eulogist. Arrangements are by Golden gate Mortuary, 1416 N. Hughes St.

Kenneth was employed by Bell Helicopter until his health failed. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. He was a 1973 graduate of Caprock High School.

Survivors include two daughters, Antoinette M. Brown and Kennitha Burks; three brothers, Robert E. Brown, Eldwin J. Brown and Curtis B. Brown; a sister, Doris M. Fletcher; four grandchildren; seven nephews; a niece; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

Viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today and Friday at the funeral home.

Perry Mitchell Sr., 86, of Amarillo died Thursday, March 16, 2017.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church with Pastors Kim and Murray officiating. Arrangements by Golden Gate Mortuary, 1416 N. Hughes St.

Perry L. Mitchell Sr., the son of John T. Mitchell and Sally Jackson, was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Eldorado, Okla. He loved fishing, his children and his grandchildren. He attended the Oklahoma public school system and was a Texas pipe and steel worker for many years.

Survivors include two brothers, Arnold R. Mitchell and Harold D. Mitchell; three sons, Harold Mitchell, Perry Mitchell and John Mitchell; two daughters, Deborah Graves and Mary Mitchell; and a number of grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Estella Marie Nelson, 76, died Tuesday, March 7, 2017.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church with Bishop James Mims, pastor, and Pastor V.C. Conner as eulogist. Arrangements are by Golden Gate Mortuary, 1416 N. Hughes St.

Estella Marie Nelson was born Sept. 30, 1940, in Bryan to Earnest and Estella Carey. She attended Amarillo public schools. She married the late Bobbie Lewis Nelson in 1954; of this union, seven children were born.

She worked for Hub Clothiers and Ambassador Hotel for many years. Estella and Bobby “Vida Blue” also owned and operated several local café’s in Amarillo.

Estella loved spending time with her family and children. She spent her leisure time playing cards and fishing, two hobbies that she truly enjoyed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Lum and Otis Carey; her children, Irma Nelson and Larry Nelson; and her grandsons, Lorenzo Nelson and Larry “Little Larry” Nelson Jr.

Survivors include two sisters, Earma Conner and Robbie Fleming; three brothers, Earnest, Nathaniel and Jackson Carey and wife Lamelda, all of Amarillo; three daughters, Glendell Oages and husband Billy, Debra Poindexter of Amarillo and Bobbie Kelly of Lubbock; three sons, Bobby Nelson Jr. and Michael Nelson, both of Amarillo, and Billy Porter and wife Clara of Midland; 26 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

Irma J. Nelson, 56, of Amarillo died Thursday, March 2, 2017.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church with Bishop James Mims, pastor, officiating and the Rev. V.C. Conner, as eulogist. Arrangements are by Golden Gate Mortuary, 1416 N. Hughes St.

Mrs. Nelson of Amarillo was born Oct. 23, 1960, to Estella and Bobby Nelson. She attended Amarillo public schools, nursing school at Northwest Texas Hospital and Amarillo College. Irma worked for Toot’N Totum for about 12 years and also worked for Walmart.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bobby Nelson; a brother, Larry Nelson; and two uncles.

Survivors include her mother, Estella Nelson of Amarillo; three sons, Durrenzo “D.J.” Nelson, Tiundrae “Andre” Nelson and Edmund “Wayne” Nelson, all of Amarillo; two nieces, Amari Howard and Demetra Price of Lubbock; three sisters, Glendell Oagaes and husband Billy and Debra Poindexter, both of Amarillo, and Bobbie Kelly of Lubbock; three brothers, Bobby Nelson Jr., Michael Nelson of Amarillo and Billy Porter of Odessa; seven grandchildren; two special nieces, Rhonda Skinner and Kelly; a special cousin, Robert Carey and Renae; and a special uncle, Jackson and wife LaMelda Carey.
