Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church at 1 pm, 1215 Hughes St., Amarillo, TX 79107.  Arrangements provided by Golden Gate Mortuary, 1416 N Hughes St. Amarillo Texas.

Mr. Jones was born to Samuel Jones and Ruthie Young Jones on September 23, 1927, in Clarksville, Red River County Texas. Growing up during the depression he attended Pleasant Hill school system. At an early age Melvin joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Jones served in the United States Army during WWII.

Mr. Jones married Emma Jean Nelson Jones, in Clarksville, Red River County Texas and the young couple moved to Amarillo, in 1951. To this union six children were born, Doris, Elise, Emma Lois, Connie, and Melvin Jr.

Mr. Jones united with the Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where his membership remained until his passing.

Mr. Jones began his construction career with Claude Dawson Sr., in Clarksville, Texas. After moving to Amarillo, he began working for Vandoran Concrete Construction, J. Rainey Construction, Buccola Masonry Co., Reid and Gary Strickland Co, where he retired in 1987. Mr. Jones also enjoyed working for Tyson Food Inc, as a concrete finisher with Claude Dawson Jr. Construction Co.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother; Samuel and Ruthie Jones, three brothers; Alonzo, Lonnie, and Samuel Jones Jr, one child, one granddaughter, and one grandson.

He is survived by his wife; Emma Jean Nelson Jones, his five children, Doris (Carl) Washington of San Bernardino, CA, Elsie (Jimmy) Smith of Frederick, OK, Emma Edwards of Muskogee, OK, Connie Mallory, and Melvin Jones Jr. both of Amarillo, TX, six sisters; Ola Mae Kellum, Velma Jones both of Houston, TX, Christine Moore of Clarksville, TX, Betty Jean Jones of Galveston, TX, Ruby Lois Jones, of New Jersey, and Edith Young of Paris, TX, four brothers; Roscoe Jones, Billy Wayne Jones of Clarksville, TX, James Jones of Dallas, TX, and Edgar Jones of Lubbock, TX, five grandsons, four granddaughters, twelve great grandsons, nine great granddaughters, three great great grandsons, and a host of family and friends.

Viewing will be held Friday, September 28th @ Golden Gate Mortuary Chapel of Angels from 5pm-7pm located at 1416 N Hughes St. Amarillo,Texas.
